Ask any successful entrepreneur how to ensure a sustainable business and they’ll tell you to stay up to date on market research. Watch what your competitors are doing and stay informed about the trends in your industry.
So every now and then, I saddle up on the couch with my laptop and head out to do some market research, scouting out new and innovative financial products and tools.
Well, this “research” exercise always ends the same way: with me slamming my laptop closed, slinking onto the floor into a fetal position, and getting all mopey about how The Holistic Wallet can’t compete with all the financial information and technology out there.
Mind you, I use very little of it personally. I love a good life-hack (I’m lazy), I crave ease of use (I’m lazy), and I geek the F out over innovative technology that makes my lazy butt productive (turning laziness into efficiency!).
But all these shiny new objects end up having little positive impact on my life. That’s why I don’t have many apps and tools to recommend.
Do you know how many emails I get from these fintech companies asking to advertise on my blog? They’re relentless! There’s certainly no shortage of options out there.
And I’m not holding back on sharing them with you because I’m afraid they’ll put me out of business.
In fact, these are the products that, quite frankly, are KEEPING me in business!
Why, with all the technology we have at our fingertips to make our lives easier and easier, are we still so friggin’ stressed? Why are we still in debt? Why can’t we save? Why don’t we feel in control?
Well, investments in fintech companies reached $19 billion in 2015 and had already hit $15 billion by last August. Why do you think they’re profitable enough to keep growing as an attractive investment?
The fintech industry is a trojan horse.
You can pay your bills online and save trees by enrolling in paperless statements, but beware of late fees and overdrafts if you don’t make a conscious effort to stay on top of this information on your own without the cue of opening up an envelope.
Free personal finance apps that pull your bank account and credit card transactions use your data to sell you new financial products, advertising balance transfers and personal loans at lower interest rates but higher long term costs. (Same goes with credit monitoring services!)
Online stores and autofill scripts save your name, address, and credit card information so you don’t have to get up, fetch your wallet, and fill out an entire college entry application with every online purchase you make. And more and more transaction fees equal increasing credit company profits!
IS NOTHING SACRED?! Well, that’s where I come in to save the day… (and a reminder to myself):
I forget all the times my clients and students and readers have told me that I make personal finance friendly and fun and simple and accessible and stress-free and actionable. And funny. Sometimes you tell me I’m funny. *blushes*
I forget the collective amount of debt my clients and students have paid off that I keep on a sticky note above my desk. (Keep ‘em coming!)
I forget the many, many emails I’ve sent to clients pointing out how their net worth has increased since we started working together, in moments when they feel like they’re still treading water after indulging in some retail therapy or receiving a higher-than-expected bill.
I forget the clients who come to me after they’ve exhausted all their energy building budgets in Mint and can’t seem to relate to Dave Ramsey’s holier-than-thou material and feel like the more attention they pay to their finances, the dumber it makes them feel.
What do I do differently? I start working at your CORE
I work to increase your connection with your money (not decrease it!) by making you more mindful of what’s going on rather than keeping it out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Control and ignorance are not compatible!
I work to leverage technology to your benefit, not your detriment, using tools to make conscious and informed choices without overwhelming you with decision-fatigue and hidden sales tactics.
I work to provide personalized analysis to get you where you want to be faster and smarter by using your existing habits and personality to create authentic options that you’ll stick to.
I work to help you be more flexible and less critical because you’re the only one who can define what is frivolous spending. (Oh, the amount of people who don’t work with me because they’re afraid I’ll judge them!)
I work to teach you how to connect your values to your money and engage in conscious capitalism to create a stronger economy for all of us collectively.
